Tokyo Rice Kings

My topic of inquiry is so-called “rice kings” – western, predominantly white, men who have a strong preference for Asian women – here in Tokyo. I want to explore, inhabit and distort the stereotypes and assumptions made about these men, as well as inter-cultural romance in Tokyo. To this end, I have made a short mockumentary film, which includes both scripted and improvised content, interviews with real people and staged “interviews” with fictional characters. The main narrative arc follows the band, ‘The Rice Kings,’ a Tokyo-based (all-foreigner) blues band as they prepare for their last show. Below is the rough cut of the film, and some stills that will be included in the project.
